Spinal Decompression Therapy
What is Spinal Decompression Therapy
Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression (NSSD), also known as Spinal Decompression, is a non-invasive method effective in treating back pain, neck pain, and sciatica caused by bulging, herniated, or degenerative discs or facet syndrome. Even post-surgical patients and those suffering from certain types of stenosis (a narrowing of the spinal canal) have reported significant pain relief from NSSD treatments.
Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression, not to be confused with linear traction, slowly lengthens and decompresses the spine, creating negative pressures within the discs. This reversal of pressure creates an intradiscal vacuum that helps reposition bulging discs and pull extruded disc material back into place, taking pressure off pinched nerves. Spinal experts believe that nutrients, oxygen, and fluids are drawn into the disc to create a revitalized environment conducive to healing.
Experts surmise that Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression stimulates the body’s repair mechanism, providing the building blocks needed to mend injured and degenerated discs. NSSD enables the body to get to work to heal itself! Now there truly is hope for lasting relief without drugs, injections, or surgery.
In a recent study conducted by Dr. John Leslie of the Mayo clinic showing NSSD to be up to 88.9% effective in treating neck and back pain!
Let’s look at some statistics related to back pain and back surgeries:
- Back pain affects up to 80% of Americans at some point in their lives.
- Lower back pain is the most common disability among people under 45
- Back pain costs more than $100 billion annually in the USA.
- Over $20 billion of this total cost is spent on back surgery
- More than 1 million Americans undergo back surgery yearly. This rate is double that of most developed countries and 5x that of the United Kingdom!
What is the cost of Back Surgery?
- $6-8K….endoscopic surgery
- $60K….spinal fusion
- $85K….laminectomy
- Additional costs can include:
- Physical Therapy
- Medication and Hospital Charges
- Lost Wages
- Post-Surgical Complications Including Infection
Dr. Timothy Kremchek, M.D., Orthopedic Surgeon, as seen on ESPN, HBO, USA Today and Sports Illustrated, tells us, “Back surgery….the risks are enormous. Infection, nerve injury, the failed back surgery where you have chronic pain for the rest of your life. If I have a patient that comes in, I don’t care who they are, and they’ve got back or neck pain, before I would ever recommend that they had a surgery, a surgical procedure, an invasive procedure, even an epidural, an injection, I’d recommend Spinal Decompression, because there’s no down side to trying this and it works.”
Spondylosis Definition: This condition is often used to describe degenerative arthritis (osteoarthritis) of the spine.
Should I Get Spinal Decompression Therapy
If you’re looking for a non-invasive method for back pain relief, then spinal decompression therapy is an effective alternative. You might be a candidate for decompression therapy if you suffer from:
- Disc bulge or protrusion: A condition in which the outer layers of discs move out of place, causing pressure on spinal nerves.
- Disc herniation: The inner part of the disc pierces through the outer layers causing swelling and pressure on the spinal nerves.
- Sciatica: Pain going down the leg caused by pressure on spinal nerves.
- Stenosis: Pain that travels down the arms and legs due to pressure on the spinal cord.
- Disc degeneration: Deterioration of disc causing a loss of disc height.
- Facet Syndrome: A condition affecting the small joints of the back and spinal bones.
People with the following conditions should NOT have nonsurgical spinal decompression therapy:
- Pregnancy
- Abdominal aortic aneurysm
- Metal implants in the spine
- Fractures of the spine
- Metastatic cancer
- Disk-space infections
What to Expect
During spinal decompression therapy, you are fully clothed and fitted to a harness around your pelvis and around your waist. You will either lie face down or face up on a computer operated decompression table. A doctor operates the table, using the computer to customize the treatment according to your needs.
- Treatment can last from 30 to 45 minutes and is accompanied with heat of cold therapy.
